Title: Climate Warming and Sea Level Rise

Abstract: Sea level variation is one of the most significant consequences of changing climate. Satellite altimetry has observed sea level change over near global oceans since 1993 and showed that global mean sea level has been increased about 3.5mm/yr. Sea level rise associated with warming climate is caused by both ocean volume and mass increases. Ocean volume increase is mainly associated with thermal expansion, and ocean mass increase is directly connected to melting ice in polar ice sheets and mountain glaciers. Much effort has been made to understand budget of each contribution, and recently it has been revealed that thermal expansion explains about 1.3 mm/yr and melting terrestrial ice contributes about 2.2 mm/yr. In this talk, I will present how the current sea level change has been observed and understood from satellite-borne remote sensing and in-situ observations. In addition, scientific challenges to understand sea level rise will be briefly discussed.
